EXAM PIECES EXPLORER SERIES - GRADE 8 PIANO

Join us in this new series to explore the new Trinity College London exam pieces.
The objective is to provide both candidates and teachers some suggestions and ideas about approaching the new Trinity College London Syllabus.
For the first in this series, we shall be looking at the Grade 8 Piano pieces.
Main Areas that will be covered:
1. Talk about the choice of pieces for the 3 main groups: small hands, not so strong players and strong players.
2. For each piece, some of the most difficult sections will be picked and given suggestions on how to practice them.
The pieces that we will be covering are: .
1. Either Scarlatti Sonata K513 or Kuhlau Rondo or Mozart Allegro K570
2. Either Tchaikovsky October or Granados Andaluza
3. Bartok No. 2 from 6 Dances in Bulgarian Rhythm

About the presenters
Low Shao Suan & Low Shao Ying
Twin sisters, LOW Shao Suan and LOW Shao Ying, are award-winning classically trained pianists and self-taught composers from Singapore. They have won prizes at international piano competitions and they have performed as soloists numerous times with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra under the batons of Maestros Choo Hoey, Lim Yau, Shui Lan, Lü Jia, Darrell Ang and Joshua Tan. As chamber musicians, the sisters have collaborated with world-renowned musicians such as tubist Øystein Baadsvik, trombonist Jörgen can Rijen, cellists Alexander Ivashkin and Amit Peled, violinist Jin Li and members of the Boston Brass.
As songwriters, a handful of the sisters’ songs have been sung by Asian pop singers such as Jolin Tsai, Vivian Hsu, Suzanne Hsiao and mink. As composers, their original compositions have won international awards and are being performed worldwide. Shao Suan and Shao Ying’s joint debut album, “Romance in the City”, featuring their original compositions, received the “2014 Artistic Performance Album of the Year” award at the “10th Hi-fi Album Awards 2014” in Guangzhou, China. The sisters released their second album, “Music Diaries”, featuring their original chamber music works, in 2016. Their third album, “Summer Vacation”, was released in May 2020, and this album was ranked no. 1 on iTunes’ Top 100 Classical Albums Chart, and no. 3 on iTunes’ Top Music Albums Chart in Singapore. Their music has been aired on American and Canadian radio stations as well as on local classical radio station, Symphony 92.4FM.
Shao Suan and Shao Ying are published composers with world-renowned Viennese music publisher, Universal Edition. They are also members of the Composers and Authors Society of Singapore (COMPASS), as well as co-founders of local chamber ensemble, Ensemble de la Belle Musique (www.ebmusique.com).
