Objective of the Session
- Technical work and the new piano exercises - what is important
- Supporting Tests - how to approach the Improvisation option
- Piano technique - establishing good foundations to enhance progress
- Teaching and learning elements of the new Graded piano syllabus for 2018-2020
- Aiming for a musical performance at every level
- Q & A Session and Networking Lunch
Activities to include:
- Teaching strategies for technical work - how to approach scales and arpeggios
- Improvising is fun! Practical ideas for improvisation activities as part of instrumental lessons
- How to select examination piano repertoire for your students
- Applying aspects of piano technique to the Trinity piano syllabus 2018-2020, focusing on the lower grades - Initial to Grade 5, for example: finger and hand positions, co-ordination, balance, chord playing and voicing, pedalling, dynamic colouring, stylistic understanding and interpretation.
- Whole and small group practical work.
About the Speaker
Lindsay Butterfield
Trinity College London Music Examiner, Pianist, Educator and Adjudicator
Lindsey Butterfield studied pianoforte with the concert pianist Katrina George, a pupil of the virtuoso English pianist Cyril Smith. She was awarded a Licentiate level diploma in pianoforte from the Royal College of Music, London and gained a first-class honours degree in music from the Open University, following which she ran a successful private piano teaching studio for a number of years.
Postgraduate studies at Trinity College of Music, London, led to a Masters degree in Music Education, following which she worked as tutor and examiner for Trinity College of Music.
A wide range of teaching posts includes teaching music in Primary schools, International schools, in Adult Education, and as Head of Music at a Secondary school in London, UK.
Lindsey gives regular performances as a professional soloist, accompanist and chamber musician, and has performed in a variety of international venues including UK, Brunei, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, India, Spain and France.
She joined the music examiner panel of Trinity College London in 2000, and has since examined thousands of grade and diploma candidates all over the world. Until 2015 she was the Specialist Instrumental Advisor in Piano, and she has received a Chairman’s Award for services to Trinity College London.
In addition to performing and examining, Lindsey works as a music education consultant and gives piano masterclasses. As an adjudicator, she has been on the jury panel of several international piano competitions, including recently the National Youth Piano Competition (Thailand), the Asian Youth Music Competition (Malaysia) and the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival.
